New Memories Regional Design Competition

Metalac Company, Mikser Organization and Balkan Design Network Announce / Kompanija Metalac, organizacija Mikser i Balkanska dizajn mreža raspisuju:
REGIONAL COMPETITION “NEW MEMORIES” FOR THE REDESIGN OF CULT MODELS OF COOKWARE AND THEIR NEW LIFE IN TODAY'S CONTEXT / REGIONALNI KONKURS “NOVE USPOMENE” / “NEW MEMORIES” ZA REDIZAJN KULTNIH MODELA POSUĐA I NJIHOV NOVI ŽIVOT U SAVREMENOM KONTEKSTU

TOPIC / TEMA

Almost every household in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, and many in the region, owned cult pieces of cookware. Some of these pieces were valuable wedding gifts, some brought greetings and memories of a beautiful trip, others we associate with our favorite treats, dear family members and important events.

The common denominator of these ever-present, everyday objects in our homes are baking dishes and pots for milk, which remind us of childhood, as well as coffee pots whose classic shape evokes the scent of the aromatic favorite drink of our mothers, neighbors and grandmothers who raised us.

Along with the increasing tempo of life, our habits at home, our relationship with our households, family, community and personal rituals are also changing, as well as the motives / messages that they communicate with our emotions, or that we want to communicate with other people.

What marks our precious moments today? What fulfills us, connects us, satisfies us?Which are our symbols, messages, heroes? What do we want to preserve, and what do we want to change? Who are we, where we come from, where are we going? What is it that we all understand in common? What do we want to remember, which new memories do we want to create? What will others remember about us, the climate, culture, sights, people? What we would like to take as a memory of us?

AIM / CILJ

The competition “New Memories” aims to redesign existing cult Metalac products for everyday use:
  • by means of the modern approach to communications: proposing new color schemes - decorations on available models, applying modern graphic design (graphic symbols, text prints, patterns, etc.)
  • by means of the design of innovative accessories (add-ons, handles, cushions, mats, and covers of different materials) that adapt existing products for new purposes and the demands of today's lifestyle and style of communication in an innovative way, while still preserving and enriching the value of original pieces.
  • kroz savremen pristup komunikacijama, predlogom novih kolornih šema (podloge i grafičke aplikacije) i dekora na ponuđenim formama, tj. aplikacijama savremenih grafičkih rešenja (grafičkih simbola, tekstualnih ispisa, paterna, itd).
  • kroz dizajn inovativnih aksesoara (dodataka, drški, navlaka, podmetača, poklopaca od različitih materijala) koji bi postojeće proizvode na inovativan način adaptirali novim namenama i zahtevima savremenog načina življenja i stilu komunikacije, čuvajući i obogaćujući vrednost originalnih komada.
COMPETITION SUBJECT / PREDMET KONKURSA

The subject of the competition are existing classic models from the portfolio of enamel Metalac cookware that you can find at this link. The task for the competition is to design a whole collection that contains at least 5 items from the available portfolio.

SELECTION CRITERIA / KRITERIJUMI

The jury will give particular attention to the relationship of contemporary graphics and colorful interventions given to classical forms, and innovative adaptation of the original product for today's context through the use of accessories.

Suggestions for intervention must remain within the limits of feasible production (existing formats and enamelling technologies of the cookware, use of graphic applications, adding accessories of wood, textiles, cardboard, etc ..)
Solutions that favor environmental conservation and rationalization of the production process will be given special attention.

Žiri će posebno vrednovati odnos savremene grafičke i koloritne intervencije prema nasleđenoj klasičnoj formi i inovativnu adaptaciju originalnog proizvoda u savremenom kontekstu, kroz primenu dodatnih aksesoara.

Heritage in contemporary, inclusive usage has come to mean anything, created in the past, that helps us, collectively or individually, to understand the present and create a (better) future. It is a fluid and living concept, and always in the process of being created.
— Matthew Taylor and Clare Devaney

About

Young Balkan Designers slogan for 2015 – common grounds calls for introspective view on one’s own heritage and cultural values, vernacular roots, authenticities and imperfections, and their intelligent interpretation into contemporary Balkan context.
We challenge you to think about heritage in the broadest terms, from your own personal heritage – ancestry and culture – to our collective heritage as a society, including the places we live in. In your pursuit to define what universal values lie at the intersection of common interest and passion of traditional and progressive urban population, activate the value of cultural assets in and incorporate material and immaterial heritage in your work.

Competition subject and criteria
